This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. As a software and electronics systems engineer I have a number of lab reports to write for uni and have found that without a doubt, for anything that will require the use of an automatically generated reference table (or any auto-generated table really, such as Figure or Contents tables), you are better with Word, Pages has no referencing system built in and the one suggested by Apple (Endnote) is actually the most confusing piece of software I have ever come across. Other than that, if you don't think you will be doing a lot of academic writing then I would go with Pages, simply due to the higher level of iCloud integration. The biggest thing is dealing with highly formatted files for printout. While Pages, and Google Docs, and Libre Office can all read and write docx, they have a low rate of messing with the formatting. If you're dealing mainly with papers, which is to say things where there's a big blob of text in the middle of the screen then Pages is probably just fine.
As an elementary school teacher I have lots of formatting critical work; both in college and at school. So I only want to use a 1st party solution. The amount of time it takes undoing one case of being burnt on this is just too much.
